Another performance?
Do you remeber singing for the nurses a couple of years ago. They want us to come back. I really enjoyed singing for them, and I would be ok doing it again, but I wanted to hear what you have to say. It would be on December 2nd at 12:30 in the afternoon, so it would be 2 performances that day.

Are you up to another?
Hi there you lovely women!
I was just asked by my ward if we could perform for our Enrichment. It would be Tuesday, December 15th. What do you all think? We don't have any performances that week, but it is 10 before Christmas. I would love to do it, since it is my own ward and I wouldn't be singing with you next year. Let me know!

My part for the christmas program.
let me know if it is too long, too short ect.
This year, because of financial dificulties we will not have the Christmas that we are use to having. I know that there are others who are in the same or worse situation. I have been sad, dissapointed and at times angry, because of this, but then I read this from Elder Holland book "Shepherds why this Jubliee? and my perspective has been changed.
You will recal from Dr. Suess's harrowing holiday story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, that this loathsome little man was determined to rob who-ville of every holiday treat. In a nefarious scheme in which the Grinch dressed as Santa himself, he moved through Who-ville taking every package, tree, ornament, and stocking. As he left the city with his sack full of stolen gifts , he chuckled in delight over the pain his actions would cause the people of who-vill. He climbed to the top of a mountain where he anxiously waited to hear the sound of youthful anguish coming form the city below. He even cupped his hand to his ear in eager anticipation
But what he heard instead were the joyful sound of happy people celebrating Christmas. He was chagrined- and amazed. he couldn't imainge it but christmas had arrived in spite of him! Though the people of whoville had no trees to trim, no ornaments to enjoy, no packages to unwrap, they were having a wonderful christmas anyway, it was more than the Grinch could fathom.
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
" Maybe Christmas," he thought " Doesn't come form a sotre
" maybe christma perhaps
Means a little bit more
President Monsen said.
Giving not getting, brings to full bloom the Christmas spirit. Enemies are forgiven, friends remembered, and God obeyed. The spirit of christmas illuminates the picture window of the soul, and we look out upon the world's busy life and become more interested in people than things. To catch the real meaning of the " Spirit of Christmas," We need only drop the last syllable , and it becomes the " Spirit of Christ.
As we sing these next few numbers we pray that they will help us all remember that Christmas doesn't come from a store, but christmas perhaps is a little bit more.

Hooray for Lunch!
Hi Ladies -
It looks like lunch will be at Tio's Mexican Restaurant this Thursday at 12:30. The Address is 635 West 5300 South. It's sort of in the corner of a strip mall and Catherine says there is a Smith's close by. I'm going to call and see if we can reserve their private room. Pass the word along to anyone who has ever been part of the Singing Ladies.
Here's my cell - 801-721-8945
Can't wait to see you all Thursday!

Reunion Dinner?
I would love to see all you Gloria members--past and present--this summer so I'm organizing another Reunion Dinner. While I realize summer is busy busy busy and it will be impossible to find a night when EVERYONE can attend, I'm hoping that many of you could spare some time on Thursday, July 30th for either a breakfast, brunch, lunch, late lunch, early dinner, dinner, late dinner, or midnight snack (or all if you're up for it.) I know July is SO busy that you don't even have a practice scheduled for that month but hopefully you can take a break from all your family outings and sit down for a nice meal with friends. If you'd like to put in your request for time of day, feel free. And then I will analyze and make the call and hope it works out for the majority. Please get the word out as I know past members may not keep up with this blog. Thanks! Catherine

another performance.
I had a lady call me and she wants us to do an enrichment night in Bountiful. She said that she still needed to talk to her Relief society president, but they were thinking about either December 3rd or december 10th. She is going to call me back when she knows the date. I told her that either date looks alright, but I would need to ask the group. Let me know what you think.

Savior of the World tickets
Hey ladies, tickets are now available for Savior of the World. The shows are Friday, May 8th at 7:00 pm, and Saturday, May 9th at 1:00 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are free, but they want everyone who needs a seat to have a ticket so they can keep track of how many seats will be filled. It will be shown at the Bountiful Regional Center in North Salt Lake, and there is no age restriction. If any of you are interested in tickets, you can just let me or Larna know and we can get them for you. See you next month.

March 12 rehearsal
I don't have rehearsal for Savior next Thursday and neither does Larna, so we can practice in Riverton just fine if you want. In fact, it probably will be easier because Savior takes up the two rooms we usually use for our practices. Then, we can wait and see what happens in April.

My Two Cents
Hi ladies, since you're in deliberation mode I thought I'd share some of my thoughts with you. While I can't speak for Vicki I, myself, am bound and determined to rejoin the Singing Ladies next year. My oldest will be 10 next Christmas and my baby will be three. I think that will make it much easier for me to be gone for practices and performances. Hooray!
So...if I were voting on what to do for this year's performance I would vote to keep the same outfits and the same program with the intent to revamp things next year. Next year might be a good time to add any other voices you may be considering as well. Of course, I'm NOT actually voting for 2009 so ya'll can do whatever you'd like.
Happy Spring!! (Hopefully very soon!)

Should We Expand and What Should We Sing?
Hello everyone! I'm sorry I can't be there for this month's practice. I'll be enjoying the beach instead. If you do decide to try another night, I am open the other two Thursdays of February although it doesn't look like all of us will be able to make it for any night in February. It seems like we need everyone at our next practice to make decisions about songs and adding new members.
So, for now could we post some of our feelings about songs and expanding our group? I know it probably sounds silly to ask now about expanding after we talked about it at dinner but I'm having second thoughts about growing. The reason is selfish, I am the outfit lady and if we don't have to go shopping for another year, then I'll be happy. Another reason is I think we should talk about what we really need. I'm sorry to be bringing this all up now. I know Annalise and Becky have talked to a couple of people and Larna has a friend who would like to join, but before we get going, could we talk about our needs.
First: Do we need more voices? If so, what do we need. When we had JoDell and Vicki we had another alto and soprano. Is that what we need or are we okay with what we have and can give the two of them another year to come back? What did your families say after hearing us?
I know Becky would love to have another member from her area but when I talked to her she didn't have anyone in mind. The person she was thinking of was not available on Thursdays.
I guess my vote on expanding would be to continue this year with 8 then invite two new people next year. That would give our old friends another year to come back or Becky a year to find someone. I don't think it would be a good idea to just add one person at a time because that would be new outfits two years in a row and two years of someone trying to catch up to us.
Second: Do we want to get new outfits? You know my vote and we know Kerstin's husband's vote. What do you all think? Maybe you answered that with your first vote. I think we all agree (except Kerstin's husband) that if we don't add members we would like to use the jackets one more year.
Third: What do you want to sing? We will have to put a poll on the blog and have everyone vote. I don't have the songs in front of me right now so I can't put a poll up.
Fourth: Where are we singing this year? I haven't heard of anywhere other than our regular Temple Square performance (I just got a letter from them yesterday telling us we can call on March 2nd to schedule a date.) I told my ward we were available and they said they would consider it. Do any of you know of other performances?
Let me know what you think.

Hi everyone,
Who can attend our practice on Feb. 12?

Amy - no
Larna - after 9:00
Kerstin - ? guessing after 9:00
Annalise - ?
Jenni - ?

I'm wondering if we should reschedule or just cancel Feb. and meet in March as usual. What does everyone think???

All Kinds of Stuff.
The Savior of The World Auditions are over and Kersin and I both have parts. I called Kersin and we looked over the schedule and Kerstin can come to practice in February and I will be late. In March we can both come to practice and in April we can both practice. You are all invited to the performance. Friday May 8th and Sat May 9th. We could probably go ahead and have one of the practices in Riverton.
If you want ,Jay will be happy to help us make a CD. If you want a professional sound then it will take longer and we wouldn't be able to get it done in one session. Maybe two or three. Also, recording the piano separate ahead of time would be better. He said he doesn't want any money.
I heard that we were thinking of adding some more altos. My friend Jen Warner is a good alto. She does real well at reading parts and has a nice blending voice. I would LOVE! to have her join us. I just feel bad for Becky. It would be nice to have someone from Layton, so Becky has someone from her area. Maybe we could add two more people. JoDell, if you are reading this we would love to have you back anytime. Let me know if you want me to ask Jen to join the group.
I missed everyone at dinner. It sounds like you had a great time.

I suggest we meet for dinner somewhere in the middle to ease both ends of our traveling ladies. How about Cheesecake Factory in Murray-Fashion Place Mall. Or, Olive Garden at FPM or South Towne Mall (10600 S.). Another thing - who's paying? Gloria or us? Let's decide on a time. How is Savior of the World coming for Larna and Kerstin? Should we do lunch instead of dinner? What does everyone think?

Chocolate Popcorn Recipe
Here's the recipe exactly as I got it from my friend who first introduced me to this delicious treat:
What you'll need:
Guittards White Melting/Molding Chocolate - To my knowledge, it can only be bought at a place called "Funfinity" in Orem (otherwise you have to go to Salt Lake to get it) right next to the Distrubution Center and Deseret Book. It used to be called Shepherd's Cake and Candy supplies
Popcorn - I usually buy the movie butter kind because the butter works well with the chocolate, but I don't think it matters much which kind you get
Topping - My favorite is Raspberry Jell-O powder and Cinnamon Sugar, but you can put whatever you want on it (Black Cherry Jell-O is also good, but more a more subtle flavor).
Wax Paper
Large Mixing Bowl
Directions:
Melt the chocolate in a small sauce pan over low heat stirring occasionally (don't overheat the chocolate or it starts sticking to the bottom of the pan and gets "chunky"). Pop popcorn and empty into large mixing bowl, try not to get too many un-popped kernels in the bowl. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn and use a spatula to evenly coat the popcorn. Start small and add more chocolate as needed. It's suprising how little chocolate it takes to coat the popcorn. Once the popcorn is coated in chocolate, lay it out on the wax paper and lightly spread and flatten it out so that the popcorn isn't stacked on top of each other. Lightly sprinkle your topping over the popcorn, coating generously. (optional) use your hands or the spatula and mix the popcorn up and sprinkle the topping over it again trying to get the underside of the popcorn that didn't get coated with the topping the first time around. Let the popcorn dry for 10 minutes or so and then you can put it in neat little bags for Christmas presents or just eat it and enjoy!

Recipes
Here are the recipes I promised to post (I'm just a little slow at getting them posted!):
The Soft Gingersnap Recipe, aka, Judge's Gingersnaps:
Cream until light and fluffy:
- 1 C sugar
- 1 egg
- 3/4 C shortening
Add:
- 1/4 C dark molasses
Mix together and add to the creamed mixture:
- 2 C flour
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. salt
For best results, chill dough overnight. Roll into balls approximately 1" in diameter. Roll the balls in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Bake on a ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 7-10 minutes, depending on your oven. Take cookies out of the oven when they just start to turn golden brown. Do not let them turn brown or you will have hockey pucks!

Dinner and a new practice day
Hi Ladies,
When are we going to have our dinner? It is time to start a new year. I have missed everyone. There is a chance that we may have to change our practice day. Our stake is doing a play, " Savior of the World" . practices will be every Thursday. If I am lucky enough to be able to participate after the auditions this weekend, then I won't be available . Kerstin is also involved with the play so it may also affect her as well.
